The Catlin House was built in 1912 for the prominent financier, banker,
attorney, and philanthropist, George H. Catlin and his wife Helen. The
house was bequeathed to the Lackawanna Historical Society in 1942, upon
the death of Mrs. Catlin and according to the will of Mr. Catlin who
had died in 1935.
This three-story sixteen room home was designed by architect Edward
Langley as a English Tudor style residence. The rich interior of the
house includes inlaid parquet floors of oak, molded plaster ceilings,
black walnut woodwork and stained glass windows. On the first floor,
period furniture and decor gives today's visitors a glimpse of life of
early 20th century life.
The front rooms of the first floor have been recreated in the house's
original style and contains the special exhibits.
Also on this floor is the bookstore and the reference library.
