The Catlin House was built in 1912 for the prominent financier, banker,
attorney, and philanthropist, George H. Catlin and his wife Helen. The
house was bequeathed to the Lackawanna Historical Society in 1942
through Mr. Catlin's will upon the death of his wife.
This three-story sixteen room home was designed by architect Edward
Langley as a English Tudor style residence. The rich interior of the
house includes inlaid parquet floors of oak, molded plaster ceilings,
black walnut woodwork and stained glass windows. Period furniture and
decor gives today's visitors a glimpse of life at the turn of the
century.
The second floor of the Catlin House contained two master bedrooms
separated by a dressing room and two guest rooms. Bathrooms were
included in three of the four rooms. The servants' quarters were
located in the rear of the house with a porch and stairwell. Today,
these rooms are used as exhibit space for the Society's collections
relating to County history.
