Minutes

May 3, 2011

Barbara Evans, Chair, presiding

Attending:  Ellem Beechko, Charles Charlesworth, Rosangela deFrietas, Barbara Evans, Debi Hewlett, Annette Kalwaytis, Charles Kumpas, Patty Lawler, Sandra Longo, Dennis Martin, Joan Matsu, Michaela Moore, Janine Port, Clyde Rosencrance, James Roland, Phyllis Ruzbarsky, Charles Sandercock, Liana Smith, Linda Young

<>
  1. <>Possible table at VFW sale: Dennis Martin will respond to the person who volunteered with the information that we have.  Liana Smith is the person to contact about Centennial clothes.
  2. The Board adopted a resolution to not sell Centennial merchandise through stores.
  3. Charles Charlesworth reported on Second Friday planning.  This month’s Art Walk will be Friday evening May 13.  The venues will be the same as last time but we expect more artists.  The Council for the Arts will ask the Clark’s Summit Council about painting yellow footsteps between venues.  There will be a table downstairs in the borough building for Centennial items as well as artists there.  Patty Lawler volunteered to assist at the table.  Michaela Moore suggested using the posters that her theater group displayed in the Abington Community Library for “Rip in Time” to provide an historical background.  We will also sell the matted historical photographs there as we did last time.
  4. Charles Sandercock reported that the ABPA SummerFest has been moved to July 8-10 to coincide with the July Second Friday Art Walk
  5. Charles Charlesworth reported that August 12 – 14 will be the August Second Friday Art Walk and the Depot Street Wine Fest.  We expect to close Depot Street for this event.
  6. Ellen Beechko reported on a fund-raising endeavor that has been initiated to obtain sponsors who will be recognized at all future events.  Dave Tressler, Ellen, Linda Young and Gerrie Carey are involved.  Annette Kalwaytis reported that Borough Treasurer Christine Tsaklas reported that we have about $11,000 currently available.  Annette also reported that other fund raising has been proposed.  This initiated a lively discussion about fund raising and budgeting.  Two motions were made and approved:
    1. The Board allocated $3,000 to the June 11 Family Fun Day for the expenses that they anticipate on Porta-Potties, tents, art supplies and such.  The intent is that the only cost to participate in events would be for whatever food people would want to buy.  They have cut down on activities to save money.  The only two activities across the highway would be a cooking demonstration at the Senior Center and a lecture at the Community Garden.  Both would be early to minimize crossing the highway.
    2. The Board appointed a three person committee: Ellen Beechko, Gerrie Carey and Annette Kalwaytis to coordinate all fund raising and budgeting.  After the Fishing Derby, we are not anticipating large expenditures for any events except Centennial Day.  The question was raised about whether to participate in the Heart-to-Art mural.  The consensus is that this budget committee would work with the Centennial Day coordinators to decide the best usage for the funds available.  We expect to use all funds raised for the various events and not to have a surplus at the end of the year.
  7. Michaela Moore requested to know when her theater group would be needed.  They preformed “Rip in Time” at the Ice Festival and were a smash hit.  They have been asked to consider doing it again either at Family Fun Day in June and/or Centennial Day in August.  After a discussion, it was left to Michaela and the coordinators of each event to see what could be done.
  8. At this time there were a number of items placed on the agenda to allow the coordinators to address any concerns that they might have (see website for latest details on all events):
    1. Veteran Memorial Dedication: no report.
    2. Dedication of Turnpike Bridge: no report
    3. Memorial Day Parade: no report
    4. Robert A. Preate Memorial Park Walk/Run: no report
    5. Always Young Fishing Derby and Family Fun Day: covered earlier
    6. June 27 Golf Tournament: cancelled (Barbara Evans thanked Janine Port for the work that she has done on this project)
    7. June 2 Independence Day Fireworks and Patriotic Celebration: we will not have a presence there
    8. July 26 Pit Stop at the library: Sandy Longo reported that plans are going well and no funds are needed
  9. Rag Time Rumble: Friday, August 26, 6 – 8 pm at the Clark’s Summit Fire Hall.  Admission price will cover a commemorative glass, one complementary drink, musician and photo opportunities.  This is the Centennial Kick-Off Party.
  10. Centennial Day, August 27, 11 am – 7 pm, Borough Building side of State Street.  Starting with a Promenade possibly with the State Police Mounted Honor Guard, it will feature local food vendors, children events, adult games, historical activities, horses from Marley’s Mission, and a band shell with bands changing throughout the day.  It will start with an appropriate ceremony and be as exciting and busy as we can make it.  Planning is still well underway.
  11. The question was raised as to how long our monthly planning meetings will continue.  The best answer at this time is that we expect to meet through August with the bulk of our meetings dedicated to the August two-day event.  At the August meeting, we will decide which, if any, future meetings may be needed.  Most of the events after that may be best coordinated by smaller subcommittees.
<>Note:  The next meeting is just before the June 11 fishing derby, fun day and walk/run events.  We will use email notification of any information that might be useful to readers of these minutes with concurrent publication on our website: www.lackawannahistory.org/cs100th    <>
Minutes corrections should be directed to me at dmartin610@yahoo.com.

Next Meeting:  Tuesday, June 7 at 7 pm at the Borough Building Council Chambers.

<>Respectfully submitted,
Dennis Martin

Minutes

April 5, 2011

<>Gerrie Carey, Chair, presiding
Attending:  Steuart Bailey, Gerrie Carey, Charles Charlesworth, Rosangela deFrietas, Barbara Evans, Bill Frye, Debi Hewlett, Annette Kalwaytis, Charles Ku mpas, Beverly Krenitsky, Sandra Longo, Dennis Martin, Joan Matsu, Julia Munley, Clara Scavo Paré, Janine Port, Jacquelyn Preate, James Roland, Phyllis Ruzbarsky, Charles Sandercock, Joseph Sandowski, Warren Watkins, Linda Young, Zakil (?)
Guest: Donna Doherty, Heart-To-Art
  1. Donna Doherty gave a presentation on the Heart-to-Art program talking about the 4 foot by 8 foot murals that they have created for many organizations.  If we want one, it would cost us $5,000 and they would need at least three weeks lead time (but more is preferred).  They would provide the board with a sketch that we would help them design and passers-by would paint parts of it during Centennial Day.  They would preserve the mural and return it to us afterwards.  We could then order a number of salable items based on the mural that we could sell.  These include posters, reusable plastic cups, mouse pads, buttons, tote bags, folders and the like.  We would need to raise the money in order to participate.
  2. Debi Hewlett described the services that Highland Associates are willing to provide to support our various activities.
  3. Charles Charlesworth reported on the Second Friday Art Walk to start April 8.  Details are in the local papers (and posted on our website at this time).  The Arts Council of the Abingtons has been formed with Charlesworth and Charles Sandercock as co-chairs.  They will work with Borough Manger Virginia Kehoe to investigate possible grant money.  The July ABPA SummerFest may be rescheduled to coincide with the Second Friday in July.  For the Second Friday in August they are investigating a Depot Street Art and Wine Festival.
  4. Several issues involving flags were brought up at this time.
  5. Annette Kalwaytis mentioned that the sponsored pole flags should be up this week.
  6. We will fly the big Centennial flags that we have.  One is currently at the triangle at Highland and State but we have two more.  Gerrie will work with Virginia on this.
  7. Charles Charlesworth pointed out that he suspected that the American flag at the triangle may be the wrong size for that pole.  He read from the US Flag Code with the specification.  Gerrie will discuss this with Virginia.  We may need a new American flag for that pole.
  8. Janine Port is trying to reschedule the Borough Clean-Up.  Earth Day is Good Friday this year and the cleanup would have been that Saturday.  We need to move it away from the Easter weekend.
  9. Janine Port announced the Royal Wedding sponsored by the Lackawanna County Welsh Society will be held at the Clark’s Summit Fire Hall on April 29 from 6-9.  We will need to staff a Centennial souvenir table.
  10. Dennis Martin reported on the April 30 Abington Church Tour.  It will start at the First Presbyterian Church at 9 am.  Next will be Our Lady of the Snows Church then Clark’s Green United Methodist and possibly other churches.  Details will be distributed when finalized.  There will be no advanced registration or fees.
  11. Linda Young reported on the June 11 Fishing Derby and Family Fun Day.  The Derby will be 9-noon with awards noon-1 pm.  The Family Fun Day will be from 1 pm to dusk.  The next meeting of the committee is April 18th at the Borough Building.  She listed a very full roster of activities.  The only cost for participants at the Fun Day would be for food.  We have vendors to provide picnic style sandwiches, desserts and other foods.  There will be many child-friendly activities as well as adult-friendly activities.  The committee will provide details after their next meeting.
  12. Jacky Preate reported on the Bob Preate Memorial Walk/Run the same day.  It will start and end at Bob Preate Memorial Park at the foot of the hill south of the big hill (next to Dunkin Donuts).  It is a real race with supervisors and awards.  The choices are 3 mile walk, 3 mile run or 5 mile run.  Details will be published when available.  We should fly a Centennial flag at the park that day.
  13. Janine Port reported that the June 27 Golf Tournament is still being developed.
  14. Julia Munley reported for the Centennial Day planning committee.  There will be a cocktail party on Friday, August 26, at the Clark’s Summit Fire Hall from 6-8.  The admission fee will include entertainment and food.  Saturday’s activities will start at 11 am with a promenade down Dept Street turning at the Borough Building and going to Davis Street.  Behind the Borough Building will be vendors and bands scheduled every two hours.  In the Borough Building will be activities and desserts, an historical display and Charles Kumpas redoing his slide presentation from the January Opening Ceremony.  Other activities are in preparation.
  15. It was announced that for the benefit of the Abington Community Library and The Clark’s Summit Centennial Celebration, a limited availability of historic photos of Clark’s Summit Borough, sized at approximately 11 in. by 14 in. are available.  They will be sold April 8 at the Clark’s Summit Borough Building from 5-8 P.M., during the Second Friday Abington Council For The Arts Event.  Photos from this limited offering will also be available for sale at the Abington Community Library beginning April 11.
  16. The Senior Center will have an Open House on September 9 from 3 pm to 6 pm.  They plan to tie this in with our Centennial activities.
  17. Stu Bailey corrected the information about the Veteran’s Memorial Dedication and the Memorial Day Parade.  The Dedication will be Saturday, May 28 at 2 pm.  The Memorial Day Parade will be Monday, May 30 starting at 11 am (assembly at 10 am).  To participate a form must be submitted and the deadline for that is May 1.  There will be two bands in the parade this year and it promises to be much bigger than previous years.  Gerrie reminded people of the dedication of the turnpike bridge on Sunday, May 29 at 1 pm.
  18. Charles Charlesworth reported that because of the activities he sponsors with veterans on fishing trips, he may be able to obtain the services of the Marine Corps Band after Labor Day.  We would have to provide overnight accommodations and two meals as our cost.  He was encouraged to pursue this more.
<>Minutes corrections should be directed to me at dmartin610@yahoo.com.
Next Meeting:  Tuesday, May 3 at 7 pm at the Borough Building Council Chambers.    <>

Clark’s Summit Centennial Planning Committee
Minutes
March 1, 2011

Gerrie Carey, Chair, presiding

<>Attending:  Linda Besten, Gerrie Carey, Charles Charlesworth, Lorraine Durkin, Rosangela deFrietas, Kathy Drake, Barbara Evans, Debi Hewlett, Annette Kalwaytis, Sandra Longo, Dennis Martin, Joan Matsu, Julia Munley, Janine Port, James Roland, Phyllis Ruzbarsky, Charles Sandercock, Liana Smith, Warren Watkins, Linda Young

1.     Phyllis Ruzbarsky reported on the Our Lady of the Snows Pontifical Mass and Dinner on March 5.  She showed a $20 memorial candle that they will be selling at the Church and at the Church Bazaar this summer.  (If any are left over at that time, they will be sold at Centennial Day on August 27.)  They have over 300 people signed up for the dinner and are looking forward to a great event.

2.     Remember the talks at the Abington Community Library on Thursdays at 7 pm:  A Century Ago in Lackawanna County by Dennis Martin (March 24) and Way Back When by Warren Watkins (April 14)

3.     Kathy Drake reported on our budget.  We need to provide working figures for events that need financing during the year.  The two major events that will need such financing are the Family Fun Day on June 11 (the Fishing Derby is self-supporting) and Centennial Day in August.  At this time, the Family Fun Day committee is most concerned about tents for protection from a hot sun and for protection from rain (as happened last year).  When we get a better handle on our finances, we will make commitments.  We estimate about $9,000 is currently unencumbered and available.

4.     Fishing Derby/Family Fun Day, June 11.  Linda Young reported for the planning committee which met Wednesday, February 23.  She also provided written notes to the secretary.  These minutes are extracted from the notes and the oral report she gave.

Linda is Chairman and Clyde Rosencrance is Vice-Chairman of the Forever Young Fishing Derby which will be held 9 am to noon with awards from noon to 1 pm.  There will be a refreshment stand free for participants.  They will also have items to sell to others.  The stand may continue beyond 1 pm until the afternoon food concessions are open – to be decided.  The PA National Guard will have a truck as well as electronic games (weather permitting), tables and possibly chairs.  They will not provide tents this year.

Clyde is Chairman and Linda Vice-Chairman for the Family Fun Day immediately afterwards.  All vendors must have their own certificate of insurance.  Randy Ayers and Back Yard Barbeques will provide 3 types of barbeque sandwiches- pulled pork, beef and turkey – as well as burgers, dogs, beans and salads.  They will begin at 2 pm and continue to the campfire in the evening.  Mark Giblin will sell desserts.  The entire park will be utilized for events including across the street.  Among the potential participants and events are fly-fishing and fly tying demos, Marley’s Mission, Griffin Pond Shelter, wool spinning with a real sheep in attendance, nature events, personalizing umbrellas, Countryside Conservancy, bike racing, bike repair, Community Garden, cooking at Senior Center, soccer, softball, scouts, campfire events and musical groups.  Highland Associates will help lay out the activities at the park.  The Abington Lions will help all day but many more volunteers are needed.  Their next meeting is Loughney Hall (Borough Building second floor, large room) at 7 pm on March 23.  All are invited.

5.     March 26 Holistic Health Fair Day at Grove Street health plaza– Janine Port.  See below for details.  Approved as a Centennial Event.

6.     Policy on complementary Souvenir Booklets: A complimentary booklet will be provided to all sponsors (with Thank You notes) as well as Pole Flag sponsors, members of the Planning Committee (full list) as well as others thanked in booklet.  The main purpose of the $1 fee for the book is to ensure a broad distribution rather than people taking multiple copies through the year.  As much as possible, complementary booklets will be hand-delivered.

7.     Pole Flags – we are ready to order.  If there is one unclaimed the committee will purchase it, possibly by passing the hat at the next meeting.

8.     Liana discussed what to order for the Family Fun Day on June 11.  The consensus was for tee-shirts and sweatshirts as well as caps.  She will put the order in right away to make the minimum for other orders obtained at the Ice Festival.  On a separate note was the possibility of people doing paintings at both the Fun Fair and at Centennial Day.  This would be a no cost item for us and they could sell their works if they wished.  Liana will coordinate.

9.     Centennial Day, August 26-27.  Julia Munley and Lorraine Durkin reported.

Friday August 26 – Kick Off Cocktail Party at Clark’s Summit Fire Hall at $20 per person.  There will be food and a (wine) cash bar.  Sponsors are being solicited.

Saturday – there are many subcommittees working on activities.  Two seamstresses are available for period clothing.  They have had their one large meeting.  Future meetings will be by subcommittee.  Charles Charlesworth will help with public relations for non-newspaper publications such as the Visitor’s Bureau and Happenings.

10.  Civic Pride Day – Janine Port reported.  Earth Day is April 22.  We will meet for assignments at the Borough Building.  The actual cleanup will be Saturday, April 23.  We will concentrate near the downtown areas for a walk-friendly event.  We will contact the county for equipment.

11.  April 29 Royal Wedding tie-in.  If the Welsh Society takes the lead we will participate – Janine Port coordinating.

12.  April 30 Abington Church Tour.  Dennis Martin reported.  At present we have contacts with the Presbyterian Church (Linda Young), Clark’s Summit United Methodist Church (Ed Kerber), Our Lady of the Snows Church (Phyllis Ruzbarsky) and Clark’s Green United Methodist Church (Warren Watkins).  Dennis will also contact the Clark’s Green Assembly of God Church.

13.  Proposal for setting up an Arts Council to sponsor Second Friday Art Events - Charles Charlesworth.  See below for details.  The Centennial Planning Committee commends and supports the initiative to do this.

14.  The Memorial Golf Tournament on June 27 is progressing well.  Janine Port is coordinator.

<>15.  We pulled the winners for the raffle baskets from the Opening Ceremony and the Ice Festival.

Minutes corrections should be directed to me at dmartin610@yahoo.com.

Next Meeting:  Tuesday, April 6 at 7 pm at the Borough Building Council Chambers.

Charles Charlesworth:

Second Friday Celebration proposal:

I believe the first step in an attempt to facilitate the forming of a 2nd Friday Celebration would be for the Committee Chairperson to appoint a subcommittee to form an Arts Council. I would like to suggest myself, Rosangela, Charlie Sandercock, Joe Statuto (Clarks Summit artist), Leon Vieira and any other Clarks Summit artists interested. The subcommittee would seek out as many local artists as they can find. Those members would then become a permanent Arts Council electing officers when they felt comfortable enough with the amount of membership.  <>
Since Clarks Summit does not have a significant amount of galleries the Arts Council would have to solicit the aid from various shop owners and vacant store fronts. An ideal start for the inaugural 2nd Friday in April [the 15th] would be for the Borough to open the down stairs of the borough bldg for one featured artist. Arts council members would ask vacant bldg landlords for permission to utilize the interior of their shops for another featured artist. Companies that had room and would be open till 9 pm on that Friday night would be asked to host an artist in their bldg. Coffee shops and restaurants would be asked to participate in some way. In warmer months minstrels would be performing on the streets.  <>
If an Arts Council would be formed they can solicit a grant from the County Arts Council which would assist with the initial printing of flyers and Posters. The county council could also advise as to how insurance works for the Arts Council.  <>
Planning has already begun on the Depot Street Arts and Wine Festival independently scheduled for the weekend of August 12th through the 14th with the kick-off being the 2nd Friday which is also the first day of the Festival. This is something the venders and shop owners of Depot Street have been working upon separate from the ABPA Summerfest. Three wineries and two bands have already agreed to take part, and a formal request will be made to the borough soon to close down Depot Street for that weekend. We will be seeking the assistance of the Journal and the Suburban to get the word out to all Lackawanna County Artisans from every manner and medium.

Clark’s Summit Centennial Planning Committee
Minutes
  February 1, 2011

Gerrie Carey, Chair, presiding

Attending:  Gerrie Carey, Charles Charlesworth, Lorraine Durkin, Rosangela deFrietas, Charles Kumpas, Dennis Martin, Julia Munley, Janine Port, James Roland, Charles Sandercock, Linda Young

Although due to the weather, the meeting was sparsely attended, it was  very lively.

Corrections to January Minutes:
Kathy Drake was left off the attendance list for the January 4 meeting.
Beverly Bright was the person from ABPA who reported on the Ice Festival Planning.

1.     The Heart-to-Art representatives were unable to make the meeting but Charles Kumpas had provided posters of their work.  The committee was impressed and looks forward to meeting them next meeting.

2.     Julia Munley will contact Austin Burke to see if he would do a painting of Clark’s Summit.  If he is willing, we might be able to sell printed reproductions of it.

3.     Gerrie has a contact who is considering doing a hardcover book of Clark’s Summit.  She has already done one of Tunkhannock for a celebration there.  It would be no cost to us and the person would receive any money made.  Gerrie will invite her to the next meeting.

4.     Clark’s Summit Festival of Ice:  Charles Sandercock reported on progress.  See www.theabingtons.org.  They have 60 sculptures this year, a record number.  It will start with the parade Thursday night and Family Fun Faire at the Borough Building.  They would like us to have the mini-museum open on Saturday and Sunday and would also like it to be open on Friday and Monday.  Dennis Martin and Charles Kumpas will coordinate the mini-museum.  They would like us to have signage leading to the mini-museum so people will visit it.  The Borough Building will be decorated.  He described many other activities (trolley, horse and carriage, United Methodist Church activities, Victorian Tea, Period Dancers) which are listed on their website.  There will be a planning meeting at the Borough Building at 9 am Friday, February 4.  We need people to sell our souvenirs on the second floor of the Borough Building when the mini-museum is available.  Liana Smith will coordinate.  O’Boyle has three storefronts that we can decorate.  We turned over 18 historical poster images to Charles S. to place in storefronts to recognize the Centennial.

5.     Yogesh emailed that the Centennial Souvenir Booklet was delivered to the printer on Monday, Jan. 31, at noon.  He also expects to have the pole flag design finished by Friday, Feb. 4

6.     The committee did not have any suggestions for improvement based on the Opening Ceremonies.  Charles Kumpas was commended for his presentation.  In response to Charles Sandercock’s request, we will set up Charles Kumpas’s slide show to run periodically at the mini-museum.

7.     The committee approved buying a supply of Centennial merchandise in advance to sell at the Ice Festival (and approved the same policy for Centennial Day in August).  The committee also approved sales of the booklet on the Northern Electric by Norm Bauer on commission for other organizations.

8.     Centennial Day in August.  Julia Munley and Lorraine Durkin made an extensive report.  Barbara Evans has also been significantly involved in this planning but was ill.  Janine Port was added to their planning group.

As this is our main celebration, they are planning an extensive set of activities and planning is still in its early stages so suggestions are welcome.  It will occur Friday night and Saturday, August 26-27.  The main events will be in the area behind the Borough Building with Depot Street and Bedford Street, especially the Fire Hall and possibly the old train station, also heavily utilized.  We will try to not impede State Street although it will be decorated and possibly have storefront displays.  There will be plenty of music featuring local talent.  Janine will make contacts.  Tentatively, we are looking at a Big Band part on Friday evening.

Food will be available.  They are interested in what a picnic in 1911 would have been like.  Dennis will research this at the Lackawanna Historical Society.  Also discussed was a cocktail party for adults while the kids are having fun.  Gerrie Carey will contact the Waverly Community Center to ask how they conduct a similar annual event.  The Fire Hall was suggested as a possible venue.  Janine will contact them.

They would like to see lots of flowers on State Street.  Rotary currently does that in the summer.  They would also like a Centennial Display and asked Dennis to contact the Historical Society to see what they might be able to help with.  Charles Charlesworth stated that he has a variety of PowerPoint and other projection equipment that he will lend when needed.  Julia would like to see some period costume pictures appear in the newspapers prior to the event.  Dennis will send her information about our contacts.

Janine reported that The Nature Conservancy is working on a Trolley Trail from Clark’s Summit northward along the old Northern Electric tracks and would like to work with us.

9.     Janine Port volunteered to coordinate our Civic Pride Day in April reworking it as a part of Earth Day, April 22.

10.  Linda Young reported on planning for the Fishing Derby on June 11.  Gerrie Carey is working with the Preate Family to have their proposed race end at the Abington Area Park in the afternoon when food would be available.  They are still looking for a food provider, preferably a non-profit with experience who would use it as their own fund-raiser.  Charles Charlesworth is interested in doing a fly-fishing demonstration in the afternoon.

11.  Charles Charlesworth proposed a plan to have a Citizen of the Week activity which would feature different people who have lived in the area extensively and have contributed to its welfare.  We would try to be geographically diverse in the borough.  The Abington Journal has expressed an interest.

12.  Linda Young mentioned that she is the contact person for the Church Tour in April for the Presbyterian Church.  Dennis Martin promised to make progress on this planning before next meeting.

Minutes corrections should be directed to me at dmartin610@yahoo.com.

Next Meeting:  Tuesday, March 1 at 7 pm at the Borough Building Council Chambers.

Respectfully submitted,

Dennis Martin

Clark’s Summit Centennial Planning Committee Minutes
January 4, 2011
Gerrie Carey, Chair, presiding
Attending: Steuart Bailey, Ellen Beechko, Beverly Bright, Gerrie Carey, Charles Charlesworth, Rosangela deFrietas, Kathy Drake, Barbara Evans, Herman Johnson, Annette Barosi Kalwaytis, Charles Kumpas, Dennis Martin, Joan Mead-Matsui, (Abington Journal), Janine Port, James Roland, Liana Smith, Yogesh Taylor, Warren Watkins, Linda Young
Visiting: Bob Kester, Rick Tannon
  1. The January 15 10 am Opening Ceremony is set to go as noted in the agenda: The 10 am ceremony will include a welcome by appropriate people, recognition for Bunnell Hardware – a Centennial business in the borough, recognition of Helen Norton – a Centennial resident of the area, recognition of the first baby born in the Summit this year (if practical), the planned schedule for the year, and a presentation on Early Clark’s Summit in Postcards and Photos by Charles Kumpas. In addition, we will have various souvenir items for sale, information about the Centennial Souvenir Booklet to be available mid-February, and historic posters.
  2. As described in the agenda, the evening ceremony at the Abington Park has been replaced by a Sunday Funday at the Clark’s Summit Fire Hall on Bedford Street. Janine Port is coordinating and has done phenomenal work bringing this together at the last minute (we had no coordinator until she volunteered). She plans a more detailed report which will be forwarded as a supplement to these minutes. The firemen have their monthly breakfast from 8 to noon and we will continue on with our activities after that. They include table and other games, a family friendly movie, musicians from Abington Heights High School, birthday cake cutting and refreshments, sledding and snowman making (if we have snow), and a bonfire at dusk. She has arranged for parking at neighboring businesses. Ellen Beechko offered to help with decorating.

In both of the above, the approval of the committee for the event presumes reasonable financial support from our account. The Planning Committee should address possible limits at the next meeting which would be after the January events.

  3. The Historical Posters previously mentioned are ready. On set has already gone to the Abington Community Library to display for Second Saturday this week. Charles Kumpas, who created them with assistance from Warren Watkins and Dennis Martin, passed the second set around at the meeting. They will be displayed at the Opening Ceremonies. They will also be displayed at the Mini-Museum during the Ice Festival. That museum will have poster displays at all times and other memorabilia when the museum is monitored. Janine Port has offered some lockable display cases to allow memorabilia to be displayed without explicit monitoring. [Addition: she delivered them to the borough building the next day.]
  4. Bobby Kester from J&B Printing was in to discuss deadlines. He will provide a copy of the booklet for us to proofread before final printing. The due date for material to him is January 14 and printed booklet delivery will occur before the start of the Ice Festival.
  5. Stu Bailey reported on the Memorial Day Parade. It is expected to be twice the size as usual because of the Centennial with possibly three bands. An announcement for floats will be made about April 1.
  6. Herman Johnson reported that the replacement “Welcome to Clark’s Summit” sign has arrived and work on the Veteran’s Monument is proceeding on schedule. The Borough Council will consider a motion to rename the park at its January 5 meeting.
  7. Centennial umbrellas: Barbara Evans and Ellen Beechko reported. It was decided to order 50 of the historic photograph umbrellas to sell for $30 each. Our price is $22 each.
  8. Beverly Bright from ABPA reported on current plans for the Ice Festival. There will be Crafts and Face Painting at the Borough Building as well as the usual activities. They will hold a tea on the second floor on Saturday, February 19 with the Mini-Museum around the walls of the room. The ABPA will need to arrange for tables and chairs. Ellen Beechko offered to help with decorating downstairs.
  9. Centennial Logo Porch Flags: We decided to order 50 and sell them for $30 each. Warren Watkins will handle the order.
  10. Historic cards: Barbara Evans and Ellen Beechko reported. It was decided to order 2,000 for $374.33. We will sell them in packs of 10 for $5.00.
  11. Sponsored Pole Flags to hang in borough: Annette Kalwaytis reported. They will have our logo and the sponsor’s name on the bottom. We will provide them essentially at our cost ($100). We have capability for 22 maximum. They will hang all year except for the Holidays.
  12. Centennial Logo Clothing: An order form was circulated. It was requested that a line on whom to “make checks out to” be added. Liana Smith will be in charge of consolidating order forms into orders. We all will take turns selling the merchandise at various events.
  13. Charles Charlesworth and Rosangela deFrietas requested permission to sell bracelets with our logo at their store. The proceeds would go entirely to impoverished children in Tibet. Approved.
  14. Memorial Golf Tournament June 27: Janine Port is coordinating. We need to recruit sponsors for holes and golfers to play.
  15. May 29 Bicycle Race: Gerrie Carey will discuss concerns raised by local merchants last year and report at the next meeting.
  16. Bob Preate Memorial Race: Gerrie will check with family if the race will be the same day as the Fishing Derby and Family Fun Day. If it ends at the Abington Area Park, it can be accommodated, otherwise, a different date will be needed. It will need a coordinator as Linda Young and Clyde Rosencrance are already fully committed.
  17. The History committee has added two more dates for presentations at the Abington Community Library (March 24 And April 14) in months that currently have few activities.
  18. Charles Charlesworth suggested that we contact the British Car Club to include a parade through town as part of their activities. In Pottsville, Cruise Night is a very popular event. He will follow up with them. It was also suggested that the cars at the annual car meet at Metropolitan Life in July also parade through town.
