September

  • Every Saturday at 11 am – Downtown Walking Tours
    Tour the downtown area and learn about the important buildings of Scranton. Tours start at the main entrance to Lackawanna College at the corner of Washington Avenue and Vine Street.
  • Saturday, September 4th at 10 am – Presentation of the Alan Sweeney Award
    At Steamtown National Historic Site as part of the park's Railfest Opening Ceremony. This award honors a community volunteer who has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the interpretation of local history. For more information on Railfest, contact Mark A.   • Sunday, September 12 at 2 pm – “History of Nursing in Lackawanna County” panel
    Discussion by Sue Petula, PhD, RN; Lois Kretch, BS, MS; And Ann Griffiths, RN at the Catlin House.
  • Sunday September 12 – Iron Furnaces Family Picnic Day starting at 3 pm.
    Bring your food and join the festivities. Just like people did 100 years ago at Scranton parks.
  • Tuesday, September 21 at 6 pm – LHS Annual Dinner
    Held at the Cultural Center Ballroom featuring a talk by Tony Robins on Raymond Hood, designer of the Cultural Center. Mr. Robins has guided walking tours of NYC’s architectural gems. He will discus Hood’s work on the Masonic Temple’s design as well as some of his other masterpieces including Rockefeller Center. $40 per person. Call 570-344-3841 for more information.
  • Saturday, September 25 – Summer Sojourn to Lancaster

  • Sunday, September 26 from 1 to 3 pm. – Book Signing
    At the Catlin House. For the latest book by Arcadia Publishing featuring images of local interest: “Taylor” by Margo Azzarelli.

  • Saturday, October 2 from 9 am to 4 pm – Pages and Places Book Festival
    All around the city of Scranton. For more information, see www.pagesandplaces.org.
  • October 2, 3, 9, 10, and 16 - “Scranton After Dark” paranormal tours of Scranton.
    This is a guided walking tour through the darkened streets of downtown Scranton by candlelight for a glimpse into the city’s tragic and macabre past. It is the only tour sanctioned by the Lackawanna Historical Society. On October 17th a special presentation of recent paranormal evidence collected from several actively haunted locations will be offered. Tours will start at the Catlin House, 232 Monroe Avenue in Scranton, at 6 pm or 8 pm. For reservations or more details please call Lackawanna Historical Society at: (570) 344-3841. Space is limited; if space is available, on-site registration begins at 5:45 pm for the 6 pm tour and 7:45 pm for the 8 pm tour. Price: $10 for LHS Members and $12 for Non-Members. Children 12 year and under are FREE. Presented by The Lackawanna Historical Society & Scranton After Dark Paranormal Team.
